African talents in Europe
- Talents link people and
nations all over the world.
-
Talent is respected,
admired and even adored.
-
It is a valuable source of wealth, power and recognition.
- Europe and Africa have a strong link in the use of talents.
There are many
talents in Africa, but the environment and
opportunities that nurture and promote these talents are poorly provided.
This means, African talents in Africa have limited value and marketability
internationally.
Naturally, these talents would search for better opportunities
in European countries.
African talents are useful to Europe in the following areas:
-
football and
athletics.
- National Health Service (doctors, nurses, healthcare, domestic services,
etc)
- accountancy and finance
- Information Technology
- teaching
Other skills:
- transport and communication (train and bus drivers, post office workers
etc)
- building and constructions (engineering and road works etc)
- manufacturing and service industry( security, catering, housekeeping
and
health care etc)
- business (sole trading, companies, community works and volunteering
etc).
In United Kingdom, there has been shortage of nurses in the health sector.
Some policy had been in force to attract overseas nurses to join
the UK National Health Service (NHS).
Nursing profession itself has become academic in nature, making it more
respected and attractive to join. It is now possible to do diploma and
degree courses in nursing- eg mental health.
There are huge opportunies, incentives
and financial rewards to attract people (even outsite U.K.) into this
profession.
Large amount of Africans have been quite useful in providing nursing
and alied health services in the UK.
Benefit to Europe:
- reduction of skills shortage
- essential services provided
- income tax as revenue
- national insurance contributions as revenue
- VAT from businesses and consumers as revenue
-
increase in national
production level and productivity, leading to economic growth, rise in
national income, strong economy and economic
stability.
- learning from other cultures and traditions outside Europe, etc.
Benefit to Africa:
- better opportunities for talent/ skills development
-
modern education,
training and technology transfer
- I.T. literacy
- increased awareness and enlightenment
- improved incomes and standards of life
-
opportunities for
capital flow and international investment. Africans working in Europe
have the opprttunity to assist family members, relatives and friends
living in Africa through foreign remittances.
This also helps to boost the economies of African countries, which rely
on foreign exchange earnings for international trade.
- The same analysis is true for European expertriates living and working
in Africa, making remittances to Europe or paid directly in Europe.
- possibilities of
understanding and appreciating of European culture
- better
access to modern civilisation
Demonstration effect:
- possibility of using positive European standards
in terms of accountability and governance to rectify situations in
Africa.
Europe and Africa should work together for global peace, security and
development.
